Jag tittade nyss på en av mina favoritfilmer, Moulin Rouge. OBS, varning för spoiler om ni inte sett den!
Jag har sett den massor av gånger, men den är ju så bra. Jätterolig och lockar till flera skratt, men samtidigt otroligt sorglig. Underbar regi, skickliga skådespelare (Ewan McGregor och Nicole Kidman i huvudrollerna) och fantastiska arrangemang på låtarna. Vi tar oss en titt på storyn..
Christian, en ung författare, reser till Paris för att skriva om “freedom, beauty, truth and love”.
Som av en händelse blir han indragen i en bohemisk pjäs som sätts upp på nattklubben Moulin Rouge.
För att övertyga överhuvudet Harold Zidler om att satsa på pjäsen arrangeras ett privat möte med Moulin Rouges stjärna Satine, där Christian skall läsa upp sin poesi så att hon blir övertygad och därefter kan övertyga Zidler. Problemet är att hertigern och Moulin Rouges investerare, “The Duke”, också lovas ett privat möte med Satine under samma kväll; som gjort för förväxlingar.
“Sat on the roof, and I kicked off the moss, and some of these verses, well they, they’ve got me quite cross. But the sun’s been kind, while I wrote this song. It’s for people like you that, keep it turned on. So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do, you see I’ve forgotten if they’re green or they’re blue. The whole thing is, what I really mean; your’s are the sweetest eyes, I’ve ever seen”.
I tron att Christian är The Duke, blir Satine förälskad i Christian och hans vackra ord.
“My gift is my song. And this one’s for you. And you can tell everybody, that this is your song. It may be quite simple but, now that it’s done. I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind, that I put down in words… How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world”.
…vilket hon först förnekar sedan hon fått reda på att Christian är en fattig författare.
“Wait. No, please wait. Before, when we were… when you thought I was the Duke, you said that you loved me, a- and I wondered if…”
“It was just an act?”
“Yes.”
“Of course.”
“Oh. It just felt real.”
“Christian, I’m a courtesan. I’m paid to make men believe what they want to believe.”
Men Christians och Satines kärlek är stark och trots alla odds (“Never fall in love with a woman who sells herself. It always ends bad”) som står emot dem fortsätter de i hemlighet att träffas under pjäsens repitioner, medan The Duke tror att Satine tillhör honom.
Men snart förstår The Duke vad som försiggår, och hotar med att om inte Satine slutar träffa Christian, så kommer Christian att dödas.
“She’s mine”.
Christian och Satine bestämmer sig för att fly, bort från Paris och bort från Moulin Rouge och Harold Zidler och The Duke.
“I don’t need you anymore! All my life you made believe I was only worth what someone would pay for me! But Christian loves me. He loves me! He loves me, Harold. And that is worth everything! We’re going away from you, away from the Duke, away from the Moulin Rouge!”
Då avslöjar Zidler det som förklarar Satines trötthet och hosta; hon är sjuk – döende i TBC.
“How could I know… in those last fatal days… that a force darker than jealousy… and stronger than love; had began to take hold of Satine…”
Och det enda sättet på vilket hon kan rädda Christian, är att stöta bort honom.
“You’re a great actress, Satine. Make him believe that you don’t love him. Use your talent to save him! Hurt him, Satine. Hurt him to save him. There is no other way. The show must go on. We are creatures of the underworld. We can’t afford to love.”
Hon säger till Christian att hon valt The Duke, att han kan uppfylla hennes skådespelardrömmar, och att det hon och Christian hade inte var på riktigt. På premiärkvällen av pjäsen går Christian tillbaka till Moulin Rouge en sista gång, för att betala sin skuld.
“I owe you nothing. And you are nothing to me. Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love.”
Men när Christian är på väg ut från Moulin Rouge påminns han;
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”.
Han stannar, och han hör Satines röst, och han vänder sig om.
“Never knew I could feel like this. Like I’ve never seen the sky before. Want to vanish inside your kiss, every day I’m loving you more and more. Listen to my heart, can you hear it sing? Come back to me- and forgive everything. Seasons may change, winter to spring… I love you ’til the end of time.”
Och till The Dukes stora fasa återförenas de äntligen.
Men när gardinerna fälls ner till ljudet av publikens jublande och applåder, faller Satine ihop. På Christians vita skjorta syns blodfläckar från hennes hostattacker.
“Tell our story Christian, that way I’ll-I’ll always be with you”.
Och så dör hon i hans armar, just när de äntligen fått varandra.
“Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and then on not-so very special day, I sat down at my type-writer and I wrote down our story. A story about a time, a story about a place, a story about the people. But most importantly, a story about love. A love that will live forever. The end.”
Ja, har ni inte sett Moulin Rouge än, så gör det. Så fin film!
